Great Orme Tramway has been welcoming visitors since 31 July 1902 and remains one of the most unique transport experiences in the UK. This historic cable-hauled tramway climbs the Great Orme from Llandudno, offering a scenic and nostalgic journey up the hillside using original engineering principles that have stood the test of time.
It is also the only cable-hauled tramway that still runs on British public roads, making it a rare piece of living transport history as well as a popular visitor attraction.
The Journey to the Summit
The tramway runs from Victoria Station in Llandudno up to the summit of the Great Orme. The journey is split into two sections, with a change at the halfway station where passengers switch trams before continuing to the top.
As the tram climbs, it passes through increasingly open hillside, revealing wide views across Llandudno Bay, the Irish Sea, and the surrounding countryside. On a clear day, the scenery stretches far into Snowdonia and beyond.
What Makes It Special
Unlike modern transport, the tramway retains much of its original character, from its traditional cable system to the wooden tramcars. The experience feels slow, steady, and scenic, allowing you to take in the landscape as you rise above the town.
At the summit, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views, walking routes, and access to other Great Orme attractions, making it a great starting point for exploring the headland.
History and Heritage
Since opening in the early 20th century, Great Orme Tramway has played an important role in making the Great Orme accessible to visitors. Its engineering design was inspired by San Francisco cable cars, adapted for the steep terrain of the Welsh coast.
Over the years, it has remained carefully preserved, continuing to operate in a similar way to how it did over a century ago.
Planning Your Visit
The tramway typically operates from spring through to late autumn, depending on weather conditions. It is especially popular during peak holiday periods, so arriving earlier in the day can help avoid queues.
Tickets can be purchased at Victoria Station, and services run regularly throughout the day, making it easy to fit into a wider visit to Llandudno and the Great Orme Cable Cars.
Food and Nearby Stops
The tramway is close to Llandudno town centre, where you will find a wide range of cafés, restaurants, and seaside dining options. It is also conveniently close to our restaurant.
A Timeless Llandudno Experience
Great Orme Tramway is more than just transport, it is a historic journey through one of North Wales’ most iconic landscapes. Combining heritage, engineering, and breathtaking views, it remains one of the most memorable ways to experience the Great Orme.
